Silkwood Hotel

The historic non-heritage listed Silkwood Hotel is the sole licensed premise in Silkwood located at the foot of the Great Dividing Range, 1.5 hours south of Cairns with the only licenced restaurant serving meals daily

Built originally in 1927 and re-built and re-opened after a fire in 1938, the hotel still holds most of her old world charm with updates and refurbishment scattered throughout the building. The roof was replaced and upgraded after Cyclone Yasi in 2011 and the old silky oak rafters have been used as hand railings around the 3 metre wide verandas which encompass 2 sides of the second floor of the hotel.

The recently painted front bar of the hotel is fresh and appealing with a variety of paraphernalia and memorabilia from bygone eras gracing the walls. The huge back bar, complete with 6m x 4m stage, 3 phase power, own toilets and full bar setup with ease of access to the commercial kitchen is used for a variety of events including visiting bands, private functions and parties. It also serves as an extra dining room through the busy tourist season.

The inviting and tranquil private beer garden is enjoyed by all with fruit growing throughout the area along side ferns and tropical plants. This area is accessed through the massive totally unique, handmade doors leading from the main bar area and enjoys a cooling breeze  most of the year.

The recently installed, and constantly maintained 60 panel solar system (May 2014) has cut the power costs in half making this expansive building very manageable financially to run.  A 6 camera security system has also recently been installed to assist with both staff and patron security.

On the 2^nd level of the hotel are 2 staff/managers residences (one at either end of the building) along with 7 letting rooms with a maximum occupancy of 16 pax (with current configuration) per night. All rooms have either a double or queen bed, fans, televisions and hand basins. One room is air conditioned with two have an extra single bed in each.

One of the residences has been totally refurbished since Cyclone Yasi with beautifully polished floors, a new kitchen and a huge master bedroom. Each of these residences has their own private bathroom and toilet facilities.
